On being an effective Teacher counselor.

On being an effective counselor requires expertise and a rich and diverse set of skills. Effective counseling skills are vital in forming a strong alliance between the student and the teacher.These skills are imparted through Education, Training, Practice, Experience, and Supervision.
 

Devoting time and energy is of atmost importance for counselors to grow new and develop existing skills. 5 X 10 Hours Training
 

While open communication and showing empathy are vital, sharing the tools needed by the students to solve their problems and overcome new and existing difficulties is equally important.

What is effectivecounselling?
1. Effective counselling is a scientific approach to understanding of self and a detailed awareness of the impact of oneself on others.
2. A teacher counsellor needs to be equipped with advanced listening skills.
a) Recognising the various levels of empathy of their responses.
b) Reflecting an accurate understanding of the feeling being expressed by the students.
d) Developing the ability to listen with an open mind.
e) To refrain from judgemental responses.
f) Actively checking with the students that the understanding of the feelings being expressed is correct.
3. Counselling is a process of negotiation and problem solving:
Setting clear goals that the student is able to take appropriate action.
Also to take responsibility for the consequences of their action.
Using a powerful tool like Self disclosure.
4. A basic foundation on understanding of the complexity of communication:.
a) An ability to read, interpret and respond non-verbally is critical.
b) The conscious use of paralinguistic signals, postures and gestures.
5. Counselling requires generally using a conversational style.
6. The skills of assertiveness and the ability to confront.
7. Counsellors must be competent in their communication to be credible ..

8. Finally, counsellors must recognise the impact of their own personal values, attitudes and selfesteem.
